Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

I took this challenge to involve canon pets, and it ended up being half about my writing choices, and half some Highlander meta.

Because of the difficulties of working with animals, they rarely feature in shows, especially older low budget fare. Pets appear and then disappear, written off quickly (or years after being forgotten, as in the case of Miss Kitty Fantastico). Theo has a cockatoo in one episode of Jeremiah, but it is tragically killed. Kurdy considers adopting a puppy, but decides against it right before credits roll. All because it is difficult to feature animals. This is understandable, but it also means there are gaps in the worldbuilding that fanfiction is perfect for exploring.

Generally I like to add in mentions of pets and animals both wild and domesticated whenever possible, because it adds verisimilitude. In the post-apocalyptic landscape of Jeremiah, for example, redomesticating livestock should be high on every sensible person's agenda. Jeremiah shouldn't wander through town without stumbling over a flurry of chickens. So I add in details like an OC slowly taming an untrusting pair of dogs, for the natural alarm system they offer.

However, the only proper pet I have written about is Prada, Lydia Martin's adorable papillon from Teen Wolf. Teen Wolf did a better than average job remembering that animals exist. Scott's job at a vet clinic features in several scenes: Falling for Allison over an injured dog, scaring all the cats in the clinic after he's bitten, teaching Isaac how to take a dying dog's pain away (one of the most heartfelt scenes in the show). And unlike all the other characters, Lydia has a pet, who is only depicted during season two, but who gets mentioned a few times afterward before finally vanishing altogether. So whenever I write a scene taking place in Lydia's house, I figure out where Prada is likely to be and mention him wherever possible, because he's part of the family and WOULD feature. She would cuddle him when upset and seeing him waiting at the screen door would brighten her day.

Also, an evil detecting dog is a great horror trope, and it's easy to lean on that in a place like Beacon Hills.

And now, some Highlander meta, because that's a different and rather unique scenario. This show depicted horses in its flashbacks with great frequency, but only one horse was ever treated as "important" - the beautiful and lucky Double Eagle (in the best comedy episode of the show). However, I have always believed that Immortals of a certain age are not only knowledgeable about, but deeply love horses. None currently living would be so if they hadn't been saved countless times by the flight of a nimble steed. Truly, an Immortal would have to be deeply far gone to lose that attachment, although the show never addressed this in any way.

It's partly the same reason I think Immortals were probably over the moon about the personal automobile. It's why Corey loves his Packard, and Richie will always adore motorbikes. Heck, would Brian Cullen have been singing a staggeringly wasted 'Danny Boy' if he'd been approaching Richie on foot? No way. Immortals spend half their time running away from their fellow headhunters. Before the car, and for far longer, there was the horse to facilitate this. It's a concept the show never really spells out, but it seems right to me.

On the other hand, it is notable that modern Immortals are never depicted owning pets. Cats, dogs, birds, all are unfair to own. It is perhaps another part of how Immortals end up cut off from humanity, as they have to not only raise stakes quickly, but they could always lose a fight and not come home at all. Helpless dependents are at risk from their lifestyle, so it makes sense they would rarely indulge in keeping one (although a few Immortals have raised orphaned children, which is also insanely risky without some secondary caregiver, so perhaps a compelling enough case would make one adopt a forlorn animal as well). And so the horses they once were required to travel with might have been many an Immortal's only real experience with something akin to a pet, an experience now cut off as horses no longer aid but hinder the mobility they need to survive. Of course they would be wistful and affectionate when faced with them.

I wonder how many Immortals quietly own a fully-staffed stable somewhere...

I saw this writer meme via [personal profile] havocthecat, and (being in likewise need of rebuilding blogging muscles) I have answered it. Very fun questions.

Which of your fics is your pride and joy?

All of them qualify in one way or another. Point at any of my fics and I will rattle off things I'm proud of with each, starting with the fact that they exist. Even a trifle such as Diminutive Disruption, which I had legit forgotten I wrote, I am super proud of. Because I did manage to write something silly, and because it made a few people smile, and because I wrote it in two days while in bed with a fever. It's an accomplishment.

However, there is only one true answer and favorite among my own works, and that is Life in Death. My non-linear, epigraph-laden darling. My case for why Libby and Sims were both more nuanced than a surface read of "betraying bitch" and "sadistic psychopath," and where I attempted to salvage them as people, with motivations and personal codes and coping mechanisms for the horrible stuff they did.

It was a deep dive into the show's least explained lore and into the mental landscape of a man attempting to disassociate from his own existence. It was about the parallels Sims has (like all great villains) with various of the good guys. I also went to bat for my most cherished interpretation of canon and declared that actually, there is zero proof that Sims is dead and a weight of evidence suggesting the opposite.

It's still my favorite of everything.

What are your top three most commonly used tags on AO3?

"Angst" leads the pack with 7/14 fics tagged as such. Second place is "Female Friendship" with 3 uses. There's a bunch vying for third, and if I remove tags that belong to multiple works in a series, it's a tie between "Canon-typical Violence," "AU - Canon Divergence," and "Women Being Awesome."

I like canon. I like what ifs within the canon. I like female characters. And I love exploring dark emotions. Somewhere in the nexus of those elements is where I find most of my plots.

Remaining questions definitely cut for length. )

I actually managed to post two different chapters this month, which makes me feel quite accomplished (one each for two WIPs). Since I'm now at the halfway mark with both stories, I thought I could wring a post out of it. Read more... )

Malcolm-Jamal Warner has died. Fifty four. Too young.

Too young.
annavere: (Theo)
Because I really need two multi-chapter stories being posted at once. It's another Jeremiah AU sprouting from the first season finale. It's also the tropiest thing I have yet attempted, and would not stop growing during the past couple years toying with it. So at least the first chapter is now done.

Seems like half of my reading list have already done this. I was going to abstain, but the result is surprisingly varied among my eleven fics, so it seems like a nice morning activity.

Rules: give us the links to your fics with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and fic with the fewest words.

Most hits: Without a Witness - Teen Wolf, 19,986 words. Lydia's relationship with Peter during season two, and her attempts to gain some form of control over her situation. The majority of people would bounce hard off this pairing, but that still nets me 326 hits.

Second most kudos: A Crime Spree Waiting to Happen - Highlander, 4,226 words. Matthew attempting to keep Cory and Amanda from meeting, and then attempting to track them down during 'Money No Object.' My first fic exchange, 28 kudos.

Third most comments: Guests for the Weekend - Highlander, 7,622 words. Amanda, Anne and Richie foil a burglary by burgling. A total of 9 comment threads.

Fourth most bookmarks: No More Reason to Stay - Highlander, 11,495 words. Brian Cullen visits Darius a few years before their ends, and has flashbacks to his tormented relationship with MacLeod and his steady deterioration. Somehow acquired 3 bookmarks.

Fifth most words: Other Angels - Jeremiah, 11,765 words. Elizabeth fix fic. Was supposed to be about half the length and a single chapter, but my brain wouldn't cooperate.

Fewest words: A Lasting Impression - Highlander, 3,165 words. A Methos character study set during his introductory episode. Every word was a battle, hence so few of them.

Time for me to natter about the things I finished this year and the stuff I'm planning on.

Main point of improvement this year was actually completing projects in a reasonably timely manner. Five works posted on AO3! The best I've ever managed before in a given year was three, so I'm really proud of this. It also means after three years on the site, I have finally achieved double digit numbers of work (11, baby). Small potatoes, I know, but for someone who spent my entire life before fanfiction dabbling at artistic efforts and barely finishing anything, this is kind of amazing.

All the rest under a cut. )

As always, I am super grateful for all the good conversations I've had on DW, AO3 and Discord this year and hope there will be many more in the offing.

Seen via [personal profile] argentum_ls and amazingly, finally, a meme I can actually do. Yay for me! And I did scribble my five shows before I read the questions. :)

TV questions: pick your five favourite TV shows (in no particular order) and answer the following questions. Don’t cheat!
  1. Angel (1999)
  2. Jeremiah (2002)
  3. Teen Wolf (2011)
  4. Highlander (1992)
  5. 12 Monkeys (2015)

I went in the order they sprang to mind, either as firm favorites or as shows which I have written fic for.

I'm gonna try to remember and post one of these every month, to nag scold guilt keep myself on track with my projects.

Main focus has been my Erin/Theo story, which got bogged down by me forgetting what it started as. Most of my fic ideas begin from a semi-rational basis of "wouldn't it be interesting if..." and building from there. This one was conceived as self-indulgent wish fulfillment. Soon as I reconnected with that impulse and quit trying to rationalize every little thing, all my various chokepoints solved themselves like magic. It's up over 20,000 words now, and I'm mildly hopeful it sees the light of day this year.

But not too hopeful, because I do expect to sign up for HLH Shortcuts when that comes up - although I am somewhat petrified at the thought, I am certain I'll kick myself if I let me talk me out of participating.

That is the only other short project I am allowing myself to even consider. Once those two are off the table, I'm going to dedicate next year to purely focusing on my two series until some solid results are made.

Creative waffling and worry incoming. Read more... )
annavere: (Jeremiah)
Haven't done one of these in a while because of the Teen Wolf mind virus.

My Jeremiah sequel stalled out (back in... May; great) over my usual intermittent plotting problems. So while I still opened the draft every week since my last update, it was mostly to beat my head in futility. Finally making some actual progress again, getting through the snarl.

And for the hell of it, a clip I wrote this morning, mostly to headcanon why Jeremiah's obsession with his dad completely obliterated his mom from the text: Read more... )

My second major project (because I really needed two *headdesk*) is my creeptastic Teen Wolf Lydia/Peter series, which is at least easy to map out, because it's woven through the copious holes in the canon plot. I'll get seasons 5 and 6 watched before the end of October, and then I'll have the complete picture to work with, and a full recap for where my story is going.

And the last part I worked on: Read more... )

Meanwhile, for a "short" project, I've got 17,000 words of a canon-divergent Jeremiah Erin/Theo survival roadtrip, which is amazingly far from completion, because I got bogged down in logistics (and I suck at logistics). I really wanted to get that done this year, but I am not currently hopeful.

And another clip, with Theo talking to an actual OC about Erin. Read more... )

Anyway, that's what I've been working on lately.
annavere: (strange attractors)
Occasionally I trawl (stalk? I hope I don't stalk) old DW and LJ archives looking for links to non-AO3 Jeremiah content. It often leads to purged accounts and dead 404 links and other sadness, but sometimes I find treasure, like today, when I discovered a vid.

So I'm sitting there enjoying it for its hard hitting emotions (this was such a dark show) and resigning myself to certain characters not showing up, when all of a sudden it shifts gears, I suddenly recognize the song and it turns into a hit parade of precisely those neglected secondary characters. Ezekiel! Lee! Meaghan! Sims! And I always suspected that Libby's two 'Crossing Jordan' kisses would be insanely hot if juxtaposed and this beautiful person actually did that. And the ending was super emotional and good lord, Michelle and Gabe finally made it into a fanvideo!

This is exactly what I needed today, so I had to squee to commemorate my good fortune. Hopefully I can parlay this inspiration into some writing gains before the day is over.
annavere: (Merlyn)
I now own both Miracles and Hard Core Logo, both having been on my personal Christmas list - but being realistic, I almost never buy things just for me, I have to have some excuse, so last week I decided to just skip the holiday wait and go for it. I want them, I don't want to navigate YouTube ads, I have a job so I can spend money on things I want, end of story.

Pretty packaging! I had to scour eBay for a copy of HCL that didn't have "QUENTIN TARANTINO'S" emblazoned up the side in bigger lettering than the name of the film (let alone the actual director). Distribution notwithstanding, the cheek of it. My copy has the distributor "presents" in normal tiny lettering, which I have zero problems with - plus a fictitious booklet and so forth. Fun stuff.

I do wonder what the deal is with packaging, why Miracles got a beautiful case for its thirteen episodes (seven never seen on US TV), American Gothic got a pretty case with its brain (episode order) scrambled, Jeremiah got half a beautiful case followed by multiple variations on "fuck you," and Brimstone got dumped in a shallow grave never to be unearthed.

Now I have to commit to actually rewatching them both, which will enable their plotbunnies to grow fangs and start hunting me. Before I wrote fic I would rewatch stuff all the time but I've gone avoidant lately. Concerning trend, must combat.
annavere: (strange attractors)
Part eight of Mirror, fully drafted! Not much to boast of, since it mostly consists of a bunch of people monologuing in a room. More exciting than it sounds? Well, to me... All 20,779 words... Anyway, since dialogue is the only part of writing I was actually reasonably competent at back then, most of it was easy to clean up, hence the double-quick turnaround.

The ending was a mess, though. That took some time to improve. Also, my lazy writing crutch of choice was apparently keeping secrets. I keep tripping over them and going "huh?" and then hacking away at them with a machete. A couple are actually integral to the character arcs, but the rest are weird and pointless, so then I have to go looking for a logical place to have character A just talk to character B like a sensible person.

Whenever I post one of these updates, it's never just the current portion I worked on, and always necessitates some small degree of alteration to some of the previous drafts as well.

Up next is part nine, which is when I realized on my first attempt at writing this over-ambitious fic that there were massive structural problems that needed to be dealt with before I could proceed, and consequently from here through part twelve (when I gave up) are an increasing number of placeholder scenes, present-tense recaps and hasty notes for "later." Oh dear...
annavere: (elizabeth weir (sga))
A post was still needed to cover the bulk of the season, so here are my thought. A lot to love, and a small but significant portion to hate, but most of that I covered in previous mini-rants (Carson, Kolya and the "Irritable" two-parter).

Plenty of stuff I liked, though! Cut for length and overuse of parentheticals) )
annavere: (jeremiah and kurdy)
(Thinking about this stuff got me through the end of my work week, so possibly the result of being overtired).

My reaction to poly ships encountered in various fandoms generally ranges from "well, that's nice" to "hell no" (on the unfortunate occasions it's really a slash pairing with a girl - usually canonically in love with the lead - merely tolerated because she's there).

But it turns out if you ship A and B, A and C, and B and C... it's only a matter of time before you ship A, B and C. This is probably not news to anyone, but it's the proverbial lightbulb over my head at the moment.

In unrelated news, my shiny SGA discs have arrived in the mail!
annavere: (jeremiah and kurdy)
I've made a bunch of posts about Written on the Mirror since... May 5th last year when I fixed part three. Just got done cleaning up part seven, which now sits at a positively skeletal 20,259 words. I'm sure I will pay for that later, but later is going to be a good problem to have.

There were logical gaps I filled (or at least made less obviously bad) and back room conspiracies needing clarification. Missing characters needed to be layered in, and I had once more to backtrack and add missing details to earlier portions. Always a good feeling to know I am improving the end result, however slowly.

One of the odd aspects of this ungainly draft is that when I first began it I did not ship Jeremiah/Kurdy, and the whole thing was designed as pure platonic life partners. Kind of bleak, really, since the implication was that Elizabeth and Libby so thoroughly traumatized both men that they could never love again. Changing it in a shippier direction does not alter the plot, which was always going to end with them on the road, full circle, but it does reframe the emotional loading to be more hopeful.

I have not fully decided whether I should "develop" the relationship, having them wrestle with the emotions in a realistic fashion the way I have them wrestle with everything else, or on the contrary have it be breathtakingly simple and unquestioned. I'm leaning toward the second option, because this story is already an angst casserole, and it would be nice to have one plotline that just is. Jeremiah and Kurdy have enough to struggle with in their relationship without having to redefine their sexuality. I think.

Or maybe it's just an excuse to keep the word count under some kind of control.
annavere: (Kurdy)
So I completed this side project, which was supposed to be about half as long as it turned out to be. I am, however, completely okay with this.

Other Angels
Jeremiah.
Canon divergence, fix fic, canon-typical violence.
Elizabeth Munroe/Kurdy Malloy.
Elizabeth, Theo, Kurdy, Mister Smith, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Erin, Lee.
11,765 words.
No Archive Warnings Apply.

The first time I watched Jeremiah I was limited to season one, which was all I had on DVD, and I wasn't real wild about it. Shorn of the second season, it's rather a downer. Consequently, this was uplifting to write and figure out - and a slight headache to calculate timelines and geographical intel for. At least I have finally developed a theory for why in season one it's a confirmed two day drive from Thunder Mountain to Clarefield/Millhaven, but in the second season it seemingly takes only a few hours to get there.

It's been well over a year since my last completed Jeremiah fic, and with this I've already matched last year's sadly limited productivity level of two works on AO3, so I'm doubly happy. It may even have dislodged Life in Death from its coveted status as my least read work.

While I have a few more short projects I'd like to complete, I won't dig into any of them until summertime. Meanwhile, I'll go full-time on my major project and hopefully many progress reports will follow...
annavere: (Jeremiah)
I cribbed this idea from Brightknightie's Forever Knight playlist, with the same criteria: Putting together the seven fanvids I know of, plus a number of other songs which are all tied up in my head with the show. Instant theme! I arranged the result as a playlist and had a great time with it, so I figured I might as well post the songs here, on the off chance it's enjoyable for anyone else.

But then I decided to rewatch all the vids. And take notes on why they're all so damn good. And say a few words.

It got long and fangirly, basically. Read more... )

wip report

annavere: (strange attractors)
Part six of my perpetual Jeremiah project Written on the Mirror is cleaned up, all scenes accounted for, structure fixed, damaged components jettisoned, additions made. Forty scenes, 29,772 words. This is why I haven't been around much lately.

I see-saw between certainty that this will be my greatest accomplishment when it's postable, and certainty that it's a deranged and deeply overlong season three fever dream, which is an interesting headspace to live in.
