.....how hard can it be?

I have two paragraphs to hammer out on my wretchedly uncooperative little Methos study.

Two paragraphs.
Two days off.
No seven hour day trips required. (It's been a week)

I should be able to do this, no matter what an absolute mule Methos is for me to write.

Been doing plenty of other writing, every chance I get, on my major project. It's been half a month since I resumed working on it and part six is actually half done, which means I have amazingly managed to double my best previous speed. Wish me luck keeping momentum. I will do my utmost not to lose heart again.

Yet how is it that this behemoth is smooth sailing yet a casual side piece defeats me?

Anyone else ever had a liked character become entirely uncooperative the second you try to write them?

Or the opposite: A character you were sure would be hard to write actually being a breeze? Those are nice.

I love that jolt of surprise that appears whenever you realize you are writing a character entirely IN VOICE and its effortless and just flows like blood or water. That has happened to me several times. Many times it can be such a struggle....

I mean, Methos is a slippery bastard. It’s right there on the tin! (pro tip from a HL veteran, when in doubt, plunk Amanda in there. She’ll never fail.)

Good advice! For all the trouble she causes her friends, Amanda is a darling to write. Perhaps she likes the attention?

Methos, on the other hand, would hate to be written about. Though judging by his popularity in the fandom, that's only working on me.

Oh yes, when the writing clicks, it is quite simply magic. I sometimes think all stories exist in the ether in their perfect form, and all I do is attempt to listen and transcribe until I've made the closest imperfect copy I can manage. Some lines and phrases are precise or become so through effort, the rest must be roughly translated.

She's a darling to write and she draws everyone out of their shell. Everyone.

Put her up against Kronos and she'll have him with his feet up, a tankard of ale, and complaining about those bastard brothers of his while she coos at him and steals his wallet. After that? That's when the chaos happens. (Even odds he catches her, even odds she's already got an escape plan, no chance he gets her head, she's as slippery as an eel has been making half a dozen escape plans and dosed that last tankard.)

Methos loves to be written about. Methos hates to be written about accurately. Which might help you lean into writing him? Bastard that he is.
