Civil War timeslip! Couldn't ask for a better hook. This show is increasingly enjoyable.

But first, the previously on uses a deleted scene where Evelyn blithely introduces Paul to her young son. Talk about your important facts withheld. If I had access to that information back in 'The Friendly Skies' it would have lent more impact to Evelyn's subplot in the episode, where she interviews the girl who learns how ordinary and ordinarily terrible her life turns out to be. That had to have been quite disturbing for her as a mother, and this was her introductory episode. It would have made more of an impression through context that somebody, in their infinite wisdom, deleted.

Apart from the hope that these write ups might entertain, this is a major reason I devote such time to keeping these watch diaries - I engage far more with a show this way, and it keeps the episodes distinct in my mind afterward rather than descending into a blur, so that I notice things that would otherwise skate by.

Now moving on. Alva has to be independently wealthy. No other explanation. Their job, such as it is, does not involve solving problems and getting paid for it. He's footing the bill for an awful lot of stuff with no significant cash coming in.

Evvy speed-logics her way out of a ten hour drive to sit in the woods and wait for ghost lights to maybe show up, and Paul just shrugs and gets in the car. You have to really like your traveling companion to be willing to do that, is all I'm saying.

So then there's Paul and Alva discussing the pros and cons of child witnesses to the paranormal, and then they got lost in the woods and all their chitchat is charming. I also liked how incredibly ordinary everything and everyone was this go round. By lowering the stakes and finding dramatic motivation outside of stopping a villain of the week, the episode was able to really deliver on its simple premise - sometimes in humorous ways, but by the end getting me quite choked up. It was very genuine in its emotions, heart on sleeve with its long-doomed soldiers and the doubt and despair of a poor man seeking word of his family. Plus, an entire episode devoted to historical research is a treat.

I had a glance at the YouTube comments and everybody hated the mother for some reason. I thought she was entirely in the right regarding Paul lying to her kids when they are certainly old enough to handle reality, and since Paul wasn't straight with her either, it's not remotely her fault he got shot in the woods. Afterwards she was supportive of their investigation and told her kids what was going on rather than hypocritically keep it from them. Refuting YouTube comments is probably not a great use of time, but this has been my defense of the mother soapbox.

In other news, I have only five more scenes I need to write and I'll be done(ish) with part four of my WIP. Parts of it went beautifully fast and there were lovely eureka moments along the way and now all that's left are the parts that are like crawling over rocks. When finished, I am giving myself permission to take a break and write something short and simple, lest I burn out.

I'm fond of this one! I love the way it highlights Alva's (and Paul's) sense of wonder, and I have a special soft spot for it because the CW soldier is Andrew Lee Potts, who was on two other shows I loved (Magnificent 7 and Primeval).

NO KIDDING about the surprise "flashback" of Evie's kid Matty!

I take it I have been spelling Evie's name wrong?

I actually have no idea. My wife's name is Evie, so I spelled it that way out of habit. :)
