A couple 90s films
Nov. 21st, 2024 07:56 pmFinally watched a couple of films I should have seen ages ago. Nineties cult classics Office Space and Tombstone.
Casual thoughts on Office Space.
1. This film is basically a meme collection.
2. It was both funny and quite well structured. It also wasn't nearly as mean as I feared from a black comedy, with almost no dog eat dog comedic sociopathy. I basically liked all the main characters and didn't want to hit any of them with a two by four.
3. Gary Cole managed to be the most unattractive man in the world. Mad respect. It was appalling.
4. Jennifer Aniston played the most sensible human being in the film.
Casual thoughts on Tombstone:
1. Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. I knew I was in trouble in his introductory scene and he proceeded to push every button I have. Damn. And he managed it while looking (fairly credibly) sick as a dog.
2. This was a festival of Spot the Actor. Michael Rooker! Billy Zane. Charlton Heston. I was especially delighted by Powers Boothe and Paula Malcolmson, doing a wonderful job, of course. Made me nostalgic for Deadwood! Looking at the cast list, I missed sighting Jason Priestley and Paul Ben-Victor, who were also somewhere in the huge cast. Meanwhile, actual lead Kurt Russell I do not know from anything whatsoever, which is incredibly typical for me. (I was gonna say the same of Val Kilmer, but hey, there's The Prince of Egypt).
3. Honestly, the love interest walked out of a YA "not like other girls" historical romance and I could recite her dialogue before she said it. Weakest part of the film, sadly. I was way more interested in the wives, but the film... wasn't.
4. However, this film was make or break on the guys and their relationships with each other and safe to say it truly excelled in that area.
I should watch films more often. These were fun.
