ask a detailed question about phonology, such as "Do you really pronounce 'tr' as 'chr'?" (Yes, yes we do. We all do. It's almost impossible not to due to the physiology of those phonemes.)

And this will generate a burst of absolutely, frustratingly useless nonsense, because people just do not know how they talk. They don't know how they talk, they can't analyze their phonetics on the fly, and they are staggeringly unaware of these facts.

I keep telling these people to go to /r/linguistics instead, but thus far, nobody has taken my advice. Which is a pity, because I do give excellent advice, especially in this case.

But seriously - nobody knows how they talk. It's like trying to explain the biomechanics of walking. Sure, you've been doing it since you were a toddler (probably?), but that doesn't mean you have any understanding at all of what the hell you're doing as you propel yourself from place to place. I bet you can't even explain how you adjust for your varying center of balance!

If a tidy-minded person had designed the calendar the Solstice, the New Year and Christmas would all have fallen on the same date- and we wouldn't have this odd week at the end of the year which feels like an appendix to it....

[community profile] birdfeeding is a community started on January 1, 2023. It's all about birdfeeding, birdwatching, and other topics relating to birds. It also touches on nature in general, and observations that may effect bird activity such as local weather. Both text and image posts are welcome. Now is a great time to join as hungry birds are easy to attract with a feeder.

Community resources include posts about birding events, nurseries that sell seeds or plants attractive to birds, bird identification apps, the benefits of birdwatching, and other useful materials. Check out the anchor posts from Three Weeks for Dreamwidth.

I've had a very restful break (last day at work was 18 Dec). Up to today I've lolled around, watched tons of TV, visited with [personal profile] ravurian on Christmas day and done some gentle cleaning and decluttering.

HOME: more or less maintained tidy kitchen, bathroom, hall, landing, stairs which is a win.

HEALTH: pretty good!

LIFE ADMIN: not done much on this the last 2 weeks.

DIGITAL DECLUTTER: email is back up to 11,500, phone images desperately need sorting BUT I did archived a lot of stuff off my tablet on Xmas Day so that's a win!

GARDENING/ALLOTMENTING: still haven't done the living room windows boxes or been down to the allotment.

COOKING/EATING: I have eaten all the things and have a fridge mostly full of healthy food.

READING/LISTENING: nope.

WATCHING:i think there's something a bit "Emperor's new clothes" about Pluribus so many people have raved about it but I find it boring. Still liking the newest iteration of Robin Hood. Have continued watching random detective shows on Acorn but think the time is approaching too cancel my subscription for a while. I'm a season or two behind on Stranger Things and haven't started Heated Rivalry.

CREATING/LEARNING: still going to crochet club. Have almost finished another blanket, plan to finish off my original granny square and Halloween blankets in January and then will be starting on the utterly mad Boho blanket.

CATS: all good.

VOLUNTEERING: we've had an Xmas break.

SOCIALISING: on 15 December met up with I (who had a spare ticket) and saw an interesting production of Twelfth Night at the National - Sam West as Malvolio. Christmas Day was spent with [personal profile] ravurian eating good food, having a long catch up and, in my case, napping through Strictly!

WORK: none since 19 December and I really, really needed the break!

This coming week will be busy as I do ALL the things I haven't yet done including any epic pile of laundry!

+ Wood Buffalo Pride is crowdfunding for gender-affirming gear (binders etc) for those in the community who can't afford it. I know everyone's rather tapped out at this time of year, but if anyone's able to contribute, I'm sure it'd be appreciated. The drive ends on January 04, 11:59 PM.

+ Had a writing session with [personal profile] kanadka today. Felt good to work on something! The fic I have in progress is kind of dumb, but I'm really enjoying it. Definitely a 'just for me' kind of thing. (Well, and also for the one person who consistently posts work for this rarepair, apparently. One of those situations where it isn't for them specifically but I kind of have them in mind while working on it.)

+ Gotta' admit it. I'm coming down with a cold. All week I've felt oogy, for lack of a better word, but with the amount of sneezing and nose-blowing I've been doing today, I have to admit defeat. This is driving me mad because why do I have to get sick while on vacation, argh. Well, looks like I'm not going to judo tomorrow. :V And like, I'd planned to spend most of the day tomorrow relaxing and watching movies anyway, but this is... not what I had in mind.

Dreamwidth offers a place to post pretty much whatever people want to share. However, a lot of creators put their stories, webcomics, etc. on some other platform and only share links on Dreamwidth. The same holds true for the recommendation communities for fiction and other topics: most rely on links that lead offsite. The problem with this is that more and more platforms are closing to nonmembers, becoming unavailable in some parts of the world, incompatible with some software or hardware, suffering service outages -- or shutting down entirely like Cohost did. That makes offsite links less useful than in the past, because there's no telling who can see the content or not. When creators post the full content on Dreamwidth in an open blog, however, anyone already using Dreamwidth can access that content. (Creators still have the option of using access lists and filters if they want to serve a more specific audience.) Furthermore, copying the material to multiple platforms increases the chance of more people seeing it and of it surviving if one platform collapses.  We've lost enough fanwork archives already.

This post provides a place to list communities and individual blogs where people post full content. It will help readers find new sources to enjoy, and creators find new audience members. It supports goals related to blogging, reading, writing, networking, Dreamwidth, and so on. It's a bit like Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, except not limited in time and you can echo your work on other platforms in addition to this one. MOAR GOODEEZ for everyone! \o/

You can pick whichever challenge(s) you want to set as a goal in 2026 and reply with a comment. Below the list of sample full-content journals is a short form for listing what you have chosen. You can make a post in your blog like "I signed up for the Full Content on Dreamwidth challenge in [community profile] goals_on_dw" or similar. Then make a tag for it like "Full Content" and put that on the post; it should stick that way. Check your Interests page to see if you have Writing, Fiction, Science Fiction, Fanfic, Webcomics, etc. listed there, which helps people find you. You don't have to sign up to participate, it just helps spread the word and attract more readers.

Cozy Time Together
By Dialecticdreaemr/Sarah Williams
Part 1 of 1, complete
Word count (story only): 1117

:: This story follows a few hours after “Belated GIfts” and is a separate story both because the focus has shifted, and because it’s from a surprised and cautiously hopeful Joshua Tull’s perspective… And then Pips video calls… Part of the Polychrome Heroics universe, set in the Mercedes area and the Tull Family story arcs. Thank you to [personal profile] mama_kestrel for inspiring this one, too! ::

Author's note: an HTML error HID the beginning of the story. I'm sorry for the error!

When Griffin began cleaning up Dylan’s attempt to feed herself bowtie pasta with homemade Alfredo sauce, Michael and Coventry began clearing their places, grabbing at the plates and calling “ONE!” and “TWO!” as soon as they each grasped first the plate, then the cup.

Two Purrcies; celebrations

mecurtin: champagne glass and fruit, detail from Still life with champagne glass by Emilie Preyer (celebrate!)
[personal profile] mecurtin
Purrcy finds a little taste from the bathroom faucet is one of the finest of vintages worth one of the cutest of bleps.

Purrcy the tuxedo tabby stands in the bathroom sink, looking toward the camera and away from the faucet for a moment to swallow the water he's been licking up. His tongue is visible in a teeny dark pink blep.

Purrcy was settling down to nap just where the precious, slanting rays of winter sun crossed the bed. Savoring every one.

Purrcy the tuxedo tabby is curled up on a blue and white bedspread, his tail covering his nose. A beam of sunlight falls across his face, illuminating his speckled fur and slitted yellowish eyes

We celebrated Dirk's 70th birthday early, on Tuesday (because that's when E&P could come), and this time we plotted to give him Major Presents:

- E&P got him a DVD/blu-ray player (plus cords)
- I got DVD or blu-ray sets of all New-Who Doctors

Take THAT! Disney/BBC, which have between them ensured that no New Era Doctor Who (except Gatwa) has been available to stream outside the UK for months running now, leaving his money just sitting there on the table, and have now contrived to *lose it forever* because he's never going to pay to stream it again. Also, the sets turn out to have all kinds of extra material he's never seen before, he's super happy.

Disney continues to shoot themselves in the foot inexplicably: the Doctor Who spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea just finished in the UK where it got really high ratings, Disney has the rights in the US, they haven't shown it & haven't said when they will. Dirk is very respectful of IP generally speaking, but I've DLed the eps via UK friends and am just waiting for him to snap and say Fuck Disney.

Beth decided she didn't want to go in on the big Doctor Who present, she bought him a trilobite fossil to keep on his desk. Excellent choice, also made him super happy and feeling very Time Lord-y as he plays with it while watching Doctor Who commentary during work breaks.

We don't really give presents anymore, because it stresses me out so much: it always took so much of my time and mental energy through the fall, it always made me very anxious, the payoff just wasn't worth it because I couldn't relax completely when enough to appreciate what I was given. Dirk's happiness this time *almost* makes me want to reconsider ... almost.

My brother came Christmas afternoon, had a simple dinner with us, hung around and chatted on Friday, ended up sleeping on our sofa instead of at his nearby hotel because the roads were so icy by 6:30. We didn't get the weight of snow we'd been expecting, but the ice was BAD. Fortunately his drive back to NYC in the late morning was OK. And now the temperature is on a steady rise and everything will wash away tomorrow.
