This week's happiness

Having acquired a vid downloader, I have been working my way through all my favorite vids and I can apparently save all but the ones requiring a password to view.

I'm ecstatic at my good fortune (likewise a big fan of the download option on AO3). Results of intermittent internet access through my life, copyright strikes and the time a YouTube vidder announced that they were dissatisfied with a particular work they'd made (saying so in response to multiple positive comments) and deleted it. The vid in question was my favorite in its fandom and the concept of a creator summarily erasing their own work because all they can see are the flaws has haunted me ever since. I realize they own it and it is their right, but it hurts.

I discover a lot of music through fanvids. I find that the way vidders recombine images comes the closest to the feeling of watching the show in question for the first time. Or they'll take a show or film I wasn't even that fond of and perfect it into three or four minutes of its best attributes. Or convince me of the chemistry in a pairing I had never considered. Or be unexpectedly hilarious. They are things of beauty.

So yes, main source of this week's happiness.

I have also discovered a lot of music via fanvids over the years. It's funny but there's certain songs I can only ever visualize a certain vid to.

I share your sadness about that vid. There's so many pre-2015 vids that have disappeared for various reasons. So many only ever had private hosting which was then discontinued, so one can only either hope for someone else's downloaded copy or it's gone. And then many others got deleted or had audio stripped at YouTube, or went down in other vid sharing sites.

And then there's cases like yours, where a creator deleted it intentionally. It's even sadder if the fandom in question has few vids made for it.

Definitely sad. There doesn't seem to be a designated site for them, and copyright strikes are frequent, so vids feel more precarious than fic and much harder to find. And when you find a great vid, it really sticks with you.
