Most Glamorous Audience Surrogate Ever
Aug. 11th, 2023 09:03 pmI have decided this is Fiona's key role on Burn Notice, or at least the one with the strongest emotional loading for me. She's crucial to the team, hyper competent, whip smart, lethal, sexy as hell and I adore her for all those reasons - and unlike typical audience surrogates she is neither a fish out of water nor a requester of endless exposition (that's Madeleine, quite frequently).
Instead, what Fiona does is stand in for the audience in every major argument she has with Michael, constantly pointing out to Michael that he does FAR better work as a burned spy than he ever did before, and that he can actually have a life now (ironic how he constantly says he wants his life back when being a spy was clearly an excuse not to have one). She's always telling him not to trust the latest stuffed suits trying to control him while asking why he'd even want to go back to an agency that's treated him like dirt all this time. She wonders why he can't just be happy with the delightful show he's in. Fiona completely represents us, and no matter how many times she makes the same plea to him and he fails to heed it (the type of wheel-spinning relationship that normally drives me up the wall), it always gets me.
