Well, there's an idea or two
(Thinking about this stuff got me through the end of my work week, so possibly the result of being overtired).
My reaction to poly ships encountered in various fandoms generally ranges from "well, that's nice" to "hell no" (on the unfortunate occasions it's really a slash pairing with a girl - usually canonically in love with the lead - merely tolerated because she's there).
But it turns out if you ship A and B, A and C, and B and C... it's only a matter of time before you ship A, B and C. This is probably not news to anyone, but it's the proverbial lightbulb over my head at the moment.
This is the result of ruminating on my Elizabeth lives scenario and realizing her relationship with Jeremiah (with whom I don't think she ever shared a scene?) going forward would end up being... rather compelling. He'd feel guilty over putting her in harm's way, and she would be best positioned to understand his later thirst for vengeance because she felt the same way when she confronted Theo over Simon's death - and actually, Jeremiah is a lot like Simon, more so than Kurdy is. And she's the one with the strongest insight into how much Kurdy and Jeremiah need each other, so it feels like a workable dynamic.
This also means I've given in to the allure of Cole/Cassie/Ramse, because really, why the hell not? Not like Cole would argue. The already overcrowded timeline seems like the biggest hindrance to its development, but character-wise, it's two-thirds canon and one-third screaming hot.
Two-thirds canon is probably the best (or anyway most rational) application of this principle. I can ship Erin, Sims and Libby in any combination, but I don't think there's any way to thread even tenuous logic through such a story, even if I might find the concept interesting.
In unrelated news, my shiny SGA discs have arrived in the mail!

That is...really a lot of how poly shipping starts, yeah, and if you love juicy, complicated, messy character dynamics, you can get even more invested in them. I was doomed, utterly doomed, once I gave in.
Hooray for SGA! Or possibly condolences. I think this is fourth season?

And yes, I've got a couple more episodes of SGA's third season to get through and then, as the DVD covers declare, I will have to do without Elizabeth Weir. :( But I certainly expect to find other things to like in these last two seasons, or I will be very gloomy.

It is the shipping expansion pack. That's a great way of putting it. I find it an absolute delight. And the complicated character dynamics get squared or cubed when they poly up. I think I really need a character guide to this show so I can read your fics - they sound delightful.
S4 has some interesting stuff, s5 is...a little less so to me. But there are some things. And fodder galore for fix-its.
